Our Agendas for April and May

I know our committee has a variety of important ongoing business, including document reviews, and discussions of alumni involvement in our community.
However for this school year, time is growing short, and I would suggest that we also have several other high priority obligations to accomplish before the end of the year.

Specifically, according to our bylaws, we should review the progress of our Single School Plan for this year, our goals, and budget vs. actual expenditures. This process is an important step in understanding the effectiveness of our actions and identifying areas needing more support.

We also need to prepare for next year. With a new District Strategic Plan on the way, it will be critical to align our goals for next year with the objectives of the Strtategic Plan. It would be a huge advantage to establish the fundementals of our 2010-2011 Single School Plan this spring, so that we can initiate the our next school year focused and with common direction. What actions do we need to take now to ensure that the most appropriate interventions are available in September? Will the staff suggest that the classroom reading program change substantially? If so, will we need to allocate resources to support various aspects of that new program?

Finally, I’m a bit confused regarding our overall objectives for the coming year. Are we working to craft a program that will meet our API and AYP requirements according to the No Child Left Behind law, thereby avoiding Program Improvement? Or, will we be working uniquely towards implementing the various aspects of the new District Strategic Plan? I’m sure these questions will be answered before the end of the year, but it would be fantastic to be able to respond and use this information appropriately in preparation for next year.

In the past, more frequent or longer meetings have not been an approach this committee has favored. Therefore, prehaps we need to table some of our current business until early next year, and embark upon the reviews and discussions necessary to plan for next year during our April and May meetings.

VV Technology Plan

In June of 2009, the VV SSC completed the approval process and “signed-off” on our 5-year technology plan. This occurred at essentially the same time as the District “swept” our discretionary monies, capturing the bulk of the funding for hardware and software purchases anticipated for the summer of 2009. This year, we’re living with a partially funded plan, but it would sure be nice to regroup, discuss, and decide on the appropriate steps to get the plan back on track.

As Leslie pointed out during our last meeting, the PTA is initiating their budgeting process for next year. If we wanted to request that the PTA do more than they already do to assist us with our tech plan, now would probably be a good time to ask. Perhaps some of you have alternative funding ideas.

First things first, I know many of you have not had the opportunity to read the tech plan so I’m providing a link to the document. The plan is also available from my page on the school’s website.

As a note, the plan schedule posted online only shows the first several months, not all five years. The tasks are all shown, only the timelines for subsequent years are missing. I’d be happy to provide a full schedule for your review. Just let me know.

Thanks for your time and consideration.

Nice Job

Greg - Thank you so much for getting this set up. This will be a great tool to help the School Site Council be more efficient. I also think this will be a valuable tool for communicating with the community. Look forward to discussing with you and other School Site Council members how we can best leverage this. Happy New Year!
